Grant Amount: $4,990.90
Completion Date: 2024-04-04

Summary: Zoo Miami will obtain three new pieces of equipment and associated tools to improve water quality and care for sea turtles at the facility. First is a new YSI handheld water quality meter to measure water pH, salinity and temperature. This unit is more rugged and accurate then our current monitoring equipment which is frequently needing replaced. Second is a new Parks Doppler Ultrasound to ensure we have a unit for sea turtles for measuring heart rate and rhythms for our patients during their time at our center. And, third is a new Patterson Veterinary Tec-3 Isoflurane Vaporizer to make a dedicated sea turtle anesthesia machine to be used during sea turtle immobilizations and surgeries. This vaporizer will be placed onto an existing anesthesia machine which currently does not have a vaporizer and is not currently used.

Results: During the first six months we have been able to purchase the following: One Parks Doppler Ultrasound unit; One YSI Pro 1030 pH and Conductivity Meter with the following accessories; Two pH sensors; One carrying case; pH and Conductivity calibrator solutions; One Patterson Veterinary Tec-3 Isoflurane Vaporizer; and Two YSI Pro pH and Conductivity Field Cables. This new equipment is already being used and is greatly improving care of our patients.
