Grant: 22-038E
Project Title: Satellite Beach Crossover and Beach Park Educational Signage
Project Manager: Jennifer White
Organization: City Of Satellite Beach (Florida Government)
Grant Amount: $10,000.00
Completion Date: 2023-04-23
Summary: The City of Satellite Beach, located centrally on the Barrier island within Brevard County Florida, as part an area known as the mid-reach, has some of the highest density of loggerhead and green turtle nesting in the state of Florida. Satellite Beach has recently adopted a new Sea Turtle Nesting and Lighting Regulations Ordinance based on the Florida state model ordinance, and new coastal preserve management plans with habitat and species conservation as a driving factor. Within the built environment the City of Satellite Beach has preserved ~30 acres of oceanfront habitat for conservation and environmental education. The City will install new sea turtle signage for the three city parks and the 13 additional beach crossovers. These signs will address anthropogenic stressors such as artificial lighting, trash, sand and coquina structures, holes, and human/pet disturbances. By educating both locals and visitors on the importance of keeping the beaches dark, flat, and clean as well as the legal repercussions if turtles are harassed/ harmed the goal is to improve the passion for sea turtle stewardship within the city limits. By including the City Police Department phone number on the signs the City will encourage citizens become involved in securing compliance of local, state, and federal laws regarding the protection of sea turtles and their habitat. Results: The City of Satellite Beach had 17 signs printed. Signs are 4' x 3' made of aluminum composite materials with UV ink. The signs were installed the week of March 4 - 9, 2023 at all 17 City owned beach access points. With the installation complete, the City was able to remove over 50 signs, reducing sign pollution, providing more educational information, and increasing the esthetics of the walkovers. There has been positive responses to the new signs from residents.
