Project Title: Legacy Database: Jupiter Island, Florida, nesting data from 1969 to 1981
Project Manager: Dr. Karen Bjorndal
Organization: University of Florida - Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research (Research and Educational Institute)
Grant Amount: $26,187.00
Completion Date: 2012-11-09

Summary: The objective of this project is to create the second “Legacy Database” by computerizing the data from one of the earliest tagging programs in Florida – the Jupiter Island project conducted by Frank Lund and colleagues from 1969 to 1981. The purpose of our Legacy Database Initiative is to preserve the precious data that have been collected on sea turtle populations from Florida and around the world over the past decades, and ensure that these data are available to future generations of sea turtle biologists and conservationists to promote sea turtle conservation.

Results: All of the Frank Lund data were computerized including all tag return data received from people throughout the northwest Atlantic. The Excel database has 35 fields and 11,526 lines of data. The database has been submitted as an Excel file accompanying this final report.

The meta-data have been accumulated and summarized in a Word document. The meta-data document has been submitted as a PDF file accompanying this final report.

The webpage for the Legacy Database of the Frank Lund Jupiter Island Sea Turtle Tagging Program (JISTTP) has been added to the Legacy Database Initiative on the website of the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research (http://accstr.ufl.edu/). The data are available to any interested person.

While this project was not expected to generate publications, data recovered by this project will form the basis for at least two manuscripts: (1) recaptures away from the nesting beach of sea turtles tagged on Jupiter Island and (2) growth in loggerhead females after sexual maturity.
