Grant: 26-048C
Project Title: ATV and trailer to support FGCU's sea turtle and coastal conservation efforts
Project Manager: Matthew Ware
Organization: Florida Gulf Coast University (Research and Educational Institute)
Grant Amount: $17,187.29
Completion Date:

Summary: The Florida Gulf Coast University Conservation Biology Lab partners with local and state entities to conduct a diverse array of sea turtle and coastal conservation projects. These include morning survey patrols on Cayo Costa and Don Pedro Island State Parks; incubation condition monitoring on Bonita Beach and Estero Island; and nesting beach sediment characterization, microplastic contamination, and environmental monitoring efforts from the Ten Thousand Islands through St. Petersburg; with additional projects slated to come online in 2026. Many of these locations have only primitive access or are far from designated road access points, making transport of personnel, equipment, and samples logistically challenging. This project will purchase a 2-seat ATV, transport trailer, and safety equipment to enable ongoing and planned efforts across the southwest Florida region, facilitate undergraduate and graduate student training in research and conservation techniques, and encourage discussion and outreach with the general public. The support of the Florida Sea Turtle Grants Program will be publicized via decals conspicuously placed on the vehicle.
