Summary: The Turtle Hospital will permanently install a stand-by generator to provide a secondary source of power to the hospital and critical equipment. Critical equipment includes pumps to maintain water treatment systems, food and medication freezers and refrigerators and a scientific-grade deep freezer. The Turtle Hospital has been rescuing, rehabilitating and returning sea turtles to the wild for over 30 years and continues to provide samples for top research scientists helping sea turtles survive. The Turtle Hospital is located in the Florida Keys, a vulnerable string of islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of the state of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. The last couple of Atlantic hurricane seasons have resulted in historic, widespread destruction that included loss of power for weeks following storms. A permanently installed stand-by generator at the Turtle Hospital will provide vital power needed to keep the hospital and critical equipment working in order to preserve food, medications and research samples and necessary water treatment systems. Whether it is a storm or general blackout, a stand-by generator will assure that the hospital will be able to sustain
power, and get it from an alternative source.
Results: The Turtle Hospital's Stand-by Generator for Hospital and Critical Equipment project is
complete. The generator has been purchased and installed at the Turtle Hospital.
